When people see our family today — smiling faces, books on the shelves, radio shows on the air, and a household filled with love — they might assume the road has been easy. But what makes the Carter family story special is not perfection. It’s perseverance.
Our story has always been about turning pain into purpose. From my own childhood challenges in foster care and poverty, to my wife Marilyn’s lifelong dedication to special-needs education, to our children and grandchildren now chasing their dreams — we are proof that adversity can be transformed into achievement when faith, family, and hard work come together.
Marilyn, a proud educator and author of A Star Among Stars, has spent more than 35 years advocating for children with special needs — including our own son, Dominic Jr. She’s shown the world that “special needs” really means special talents. Her new children’s book celebrates that message and is now inspiring parents and teachers across America.
Our daughter, Courtney Carter DeJesus, is following in her parents’ footsteps as an author herself, with her inspiring book Eva the Kid Reporter. It’s based on her daughter Eva — our granddaughter — who’s learning that curiosity, confidence, and kindness are her greatest tools. Through this next generation, the Carter legacy continues to shine.
And through it all, I’ve kept my own calling alive — hosting The Dominic Carter Show on WABC Radio and speaking around the country about resilience, mental health, and family. Every time I take the microphone, I think about the lessons my grandmother taught me: no matter where you start, you can always write a new chapter.
We are far from perfect, but we are proud. Proud of what we’ve built together, proud of the children we’ve raised, and proud of the hope we now share with others.
